What is “White Day” in Japan?
In Japan, March 14th is known as White Day. It is the day when people who received gifts on Valentine’s Day (February 14th) give gifts in return!
Common gifts include white chocolate, marshmallows, cookies, and candies. It’s a beautiful tradition centered around the spirit of Okaeshi (giving a gift in return).
Learn Japanese through Coloring
While you color these cute illustrations, let’s learn some basic Japanese words related to the season:
- White Day (ホワイトデー – Howaito De): The holiday celebrated on March 14.
- Arigato (ありがとう): “Thank you.” This is the perfect word for White Day!
- Okashi (おかし): “Sweets” or “Snacks.” Look at all the candies in the picture!
- Omedeto (おめでとう): “Congratulations” or “Happy…”. The banner says “White Day Omedeto!” (Happy White Day!).
Why use this for learning?
Coloring is a fantastic way to engage with a new culture. By visualizing the characters and the Hiragana/Katatana text,
children and language learners can build a positive connection with Japanese traditions.
Grab your favorite colors and celebrate this day of gratitude!
