1. Kotatsu (こたつ)
The low table covered with a heavy blanket is called a Kotatsu. There is a heater underneath it. In winter, Japanese families gather around the Kotatsu to stay warm, eat mandarin oranges (mikan), and watch TV. It is a symbol of family harmony.
2. Kadomatsu (門松)
Look at the pine and bamboo decoration near the entrance. This is Kadomatsu. It is placed in pairs in front of homes to welcome the Shinto deity “Toshigami-sama,” who brings happiness and good harvest for the new year.

The round red doll is a Daruma. It is a lucky charm modeled after Bodhidharma, the founder of Zen Buddhism. People make a wish and paint one eye, then paint the other when the wish comes true.
