Cultural Corner: Valentine’s Day in Japan

Did you know that Valentine’s Day in Japan is a little different from Western countries? Traditionally, girls give chocolates to boys on February 14th!

There are different types of chocolates given:

  • Honmei-choco (本命チョコ): “True feeling chocolate” given to a romantic partner or crush.
  • Giri-choco (義理チョコ): “Obligation chocolate” given to friends, bosses, or colleagues out of politeness.
  • Tomo-choco (友チョコ): “Friend chocolate” exchanged between female friends (very popular among kids!).

Learn Japanese While Coloring

Try writing these Japanese words in the blank spaces of the coloring page to practice your Hiragana!

  • Chokoreeto (チョコレート): Chocolate
  • Haato (ハート): Heart
  • Daisuki (だいすき): I love you / I like you very much
  • Tomodachi (ともだち): Friend

Grab your crayons (kureyon) and enjoy this cute window into Japanese culture!
