Learn Japanese: What is Setsubun?
Setsubun (節分) is a festival held in early February (usually Feb 3rd) to mark the day before the beginning of spring. It is a time to drive away evil spirits and welcome good fortune.
Key Vocabulary
- Oni (鬼): A Japanese demon or ogre. In this festival, someone wears an Oni mask to play the role of the “bad spirit.”
- Mamemaki (豆まき): Bean throwing. People throw roasted soybeans at the Oni.
- “Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi!” (鬼は外！福は内！): The famous phrase shouted while throwing beans. It means “Demons out! Good luck in!”
How to Use This Mask
- Color: Will your Kimaru Oni be a Red Oni (Aka-Oni) or a Blue Oni (Ao-Oni)? Or maybe a colorful creative Oni?
- Cut & Wear: Cut out the mask and attach a rubber band to the sides.
