Cultural Corner: Valentine’s Day in Japan
Did you know that Valentine’s Day in Japan is a little different from Western countries? Traditionally, girls give chocolates to boys on February 14th!
There are different types of chocolates given:
- Honmei-choco (本命チョコ): “True feeling chocolate” given to a romantic partner or crush.
- Giri-choco (義理チョコ): “Obligation chocolate” given to friends, bosses, or colleagues out of politeness.
- Tomo-choco (友チョコ): “Friend chocolate” exchanged between female friends (very popular among kids!).
Learn Japanese While Coloring

- Haato (ハート): Heart
- Daisuki (だいすき): I love you / I like you very much
