Our February 2026 calendar features the vibrant theme of Setsubun (節分), a traditional festival held to welcome spring and drive away evil spirits.
What is Setsubun? (Cultural Insight)
Setsubun literally means “seasonal division.” During this festival, people participate in Mamemaki (豆まき), or bean-throwing.
They throw roasted soybeans while shouting “Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi!” (Demons out! Fortune in!) to purify the home.
Key Vocabulary to Learn:
- Oni (鬼): Japanese demons or ogres, often depicted with horns and wild hair.
- Mame (豆): Beans. In this art, you can see them scattered across the page.
- Hiiragi (柊): Holly leaves, used with sardine heads as a charm against spirits.
